Emerson Danielle was born at 12:51 p.m. on Monday, June 30th, 2008.

I thought today (July 8th) would be the perfect time to write the final blog entry. After all, today is Emerson's official due date. =)

Mike and I checked into St. Joseph Hospital, Kirkwood, on Sunday night. I was feeling pretty nervous about being induced, but knew there was no other way out. =) They inserted the cervidil around 5:00 p.m. Mike and I just hung out and watched t.v. that night. I did take a sleeping pill, but can't say I slept well.

The next morning (birthday) they removed the cervidil and started me on pitocin around 6:00 a.m. I started feeling cramps, but nothing serious. Around 8:30 a.m. Dr. Boveri came in. I was only dilated to 1 cm at this point. He broke my water to get things moving. Within the next hour I felt contractions steadily getting more intense. I didn't mind feeling the contractions. I wanted to get an idea of what labor was like before they gave me my epidural. Not long after they broke my water I was at a point where I didn't want to know how much worse it could be. I had felt enough. I was ready, where was the epidural angel?!?

I received my epidural around 9:30 a.m. It was amazing! Our nurse (Melanie) checked me immediately after the epidural. Much to her surprise I was already dilated to 6 cm. She looked shocked! She said she had best call Dr. Boveri just to give him the heads up. Things were moving....FAST! By 11:30 the room had been transformed from the Holiday Inn into the "delivery room."

After pushing for about one hour, Baby E (E is for Emerson too!) was born at 12:51 p.m. They placed her on my chest, and it was a moment that I will never forget. She was screaming her little head off, and to us, she was perfect. She weighed 8 lb. 3 oz. and was 21 1/2 inches long.

Mike, Dr. Boveri and Melanie were awesome. They were all so encouraging to me throughout the entire delivery. I could not have asked for a better experience. It was everything I had hoped for. I feel very lucky.

So finally, Baby Emerson is home with us. Mike and I are both on cloud nine with this little lady. Thanks to everyone for keeping up with us throughout this awesome experience.

38-39 weeks:
Today is my last day at the office before Baby Ehrler's arrival! It is also the last blog entry before Mike and I are officially parents! I am very excited for Monday.
I have to be honest, I am a little scared. I think that is only natural.

I went to my last Dr. appointment and non-stress test yesterday. Everything is looking good. I am still only dilated to 1 cm. The plan is that Sunday night they will start me on cervidil to thin my cervix (he also mentioned a possible sleeping pill to ensure I relax and get some zzzz's). Dr. Boveri said they will start pitocin very early Monday morning. After that, he will come in around 8:30 to check me, and at that time may break my water. Once he does that, there is no turning back! (there really is no turning back at this point anyway, I certainly don't want to stay in this condition forever!)

Physically I am very tired, and baby E's movements are becoming more and more uncomfortable to me. She is so big now that I just feel "full of baby" and like she could just rip through my skin at any moment. It has to be so cramped in there for her.
I am also a little emotional. The excitement, fear and anticipation is getting to me just a bit. I am a little more teary than normal. Last night I was over tired and over thinking things. Wilson and I shared a moment (Mike was sound asleep on the couch, and dogs are great listeners). I was thinking of how I can't wait for baby E to be here, and I looked at Wilson and thought about the big change that is getting ready to happen in our house. I couldn't help but be a little emotional. Happy, scared, excited, terrified....etc. All sorts of feelings were flowing!

A funny story I should share: On Wednesday I went to Target. I will admit that my parking job was not 100%. However I was in between the lines, and my tires were not anywhere close to the white line. When I came out someone had parked so close to my car that I could not fit into my driver's side door. I tried every angle. I tried to sit in backwards, I attempted it turned sideways, nothing was working. Finally, I put my purse and bag in the backseat (I had to get serious about this). I considered just climbing over the center counsel. In all honesty, that did not look any easier. I can barely lift a leg to put pants on these days. So, I toughed it out through tears (hey, I told you I am a little more teary than the norm.) and SQUEEEEEEEEZED into the car door. It was a bit painful, and probably not the smartest thing I have done since I have been pregnant. I am sure Baby E wondered what the heck was happening! Her space was certainly reduced for a moment. I kept thinking "this is going to make a really funny story after I am not so ticked off. "
I couldn't help myself, so I parked in a different spot where I proceeded to write a nice note to the wonderful owner of the vehicle that had just shot my self esteem, and threw me into a crying jag. Needless to say the letter was probably an immature action on my part, but it sure did help me to leave Target with a big fat smile on my face. I felt so much better.

P.S. If any of you were at Target the other day, and ended up with a nice note on your windshield, it must just be a coincidence.

Here we are, Baby E is officially full term!

I had a Dr. appointment this morning. Dr. Boveri says I am dilated to 1 cm and 60% effaced. He said he could feel the baby's head!
He also found that I have a bladder infection. I read that this is caused from the baby putting pressure on the bladder and urethra. Dr. Boveri prescribed an antibiotic. We are still on schedule for our June 30th induction.

I can't believe the final days are really here. On one hand it feels like I have been pregnant forever. On another hand it seems like it flew by. I am very excited, a little nervous, but very excited. My goal is to stay positive. The thought of labor and delivery is certainly scary, but I want to try and overlook those thoughts, and look at the big picture...there is an awesome little baby girl on the way!

I went out to dinner with Katie last night. She is 26 weeks pregnant, and she looks adorable! Her little boy will be here before she knows it! We decided to go out for our "last supper before we are parents." It is just wild to think that next time I see her, "Baby E" will be here.

Mike and I are working on locking in on a name for our girl. We like, Heidi, Emmerson and Meg. Now we just have to pick. We may have to see her first?!? For now we can just stick with "Baby E."

I had my first exam today. Dr. Boveri did a strep B culture and checked my cervix. It seems my cervix is still closed, but it is thinning just a bit.
Dr. Boveri officially scheduled for me to be induced on June 30th. I go in to the hospital on Sunday, June 29th at 4:00. Just 2 short weeks from this coming Sunday!
Guess I should do this little gal's laundry and get ready.

I also had another stress test this morning. Baby E had the hiccups while they were monitoring her. I still enjoy going to the hospital for the tests. Every nurse I've had has been awesome!

My mom surprised us yesterday and brought baby E's glider (rocker) to our house. It was waiting for us in the baby's room when we got home. I had no idea it was going to be so cute! It is pink, green and white plaid (great pick Mom!).
Mike and I sat in the baby's room for a while last night (I think Mike really likes that glider). I showed him how to put a diaper on a teddy bear. We skipped our last 2 child birth prep classes (bad!), so we gave ourselves our own lesson at home. hee hee!

All is great! I am just a little more tired than usual (I know, I know..I don't even know what tired is, just wait until the baby comes.) =)

...finally! I will say, it was well worth the wait. I love the way it looks. It is a very dark espresso color. We have a crib, chest of drawers and a changing table that turns into her dresser when she gets older (her bed also converts into her "big girl" bed).

Last night Mom and Mark helped put the crib and room together. I have the changing table fully stocked and ready. I've washed all blankets, towels, wash cloths and burp cloths. I still have to wash her clothes and hang some things on the walls (I will work on it this week).
We set up the "Pack and Play" and her swing in the living room. The "Pack and Play" is going to be great for downstairs. It has a changing table on it and everything. We are set! I asked my mom if she thinks it is too early to have all of this baby stuff sitting out all over the house. She informed me I only have 3 weeks, it is not too early. Baby E is officially full term next week. When I think of it like that, it is just unbelievable. Our baby certainly has her place in our house. Now all we need is the baby! I cannot wait!

As for how I am feeling physically; all I can say is, Wow! I am so tired. I could just lay around and snooze all day long. I just don't have much energy at all.

I go to the Dr. Thursday. I will write more then.

I gave in and went for the 3D ultrasound. I wasn't going to do it, but then I broke. I am so glad I went. It was awesome to see her little face on the screen. I felt so much when I saw her. I love this little baby! It is so different seeing her with actual features as opposed to the normal ultra sound you get. The tech and I got a kick out of her cute chubby cheeks.
I know it is REALLY hard to say, after all, the pictures aren't the greatest, but I think I see a little resemblance to Mike. Isn't that usually how it works anyway? The mom carries the baby, goes through labor and delivery, and the baby comes out looking just like it's daddy. =) It looks like she may have lots and lots of dark hair!?!? We will find out soon enough.

I am still going for my non-stress fetal monitoring 2xs a week. All is going well (I still love the nurses at St. Joe's). I have a Dr. appointment next Thursday, and I go every week after that. Next week he starts exams.

Mike and I worked on the baby's room last night. Everything is in place, except the things that can't be put away until we get her furniture...we are still waiting for the infamous furniture to arrive! I still need to wash all of the blankets, sheets, clothes etc. I keep putting it off. I guess I will get busy on that within the next week. This little gal has lots of clothes already. Mike says her closet looks as bad as mine. Welcome to living with 2 girls Mike! =)

Mike's mom and dad are coming down for the weekend. We are really looking forward to their visit. I bet the weekend is going to fly by!

Non-Stress Test

I had my first monitoring appointment this morning. I actually really enjoyed it!
The staff at St. Joseph Hospital were so nice to me. I didn't want to leave (probably because I was headed in to work after the appointment.) ha ha!
I had to lay in bed and a nurse put the monitors on my belly. Each time I felt the baby move I pressed a button. Afterwards, a Dr. came in to read my results. He called my results in to Dr. Boveri, and I was done. The purpose of the test is to see that the baby's heart rate goes up with her movements. This shows that she is healthy. They said the baby looks great!

I will go 2xs a week for these tests. My next one is Monday. Dr. Boveri said he thinks it is going to be over-kill. He is not really too worried about anything, but he wants to keep a close eye on the baby. Sometimes with blood clotting issues and pregnancy the placenta can stop working as good as it should. The shots I am on help keep the placenta healthy. The monitoring is just taking extra precaution. I have no problem with playing things as safe as possible. I appreciate that Dr. Boveri is taking such good care of us. I feel like I am in the best possible hands I could be in. Plus, who wouldn't want to lay in bed for an hour and just listen to their unborn baby's heartbeat while be served refreshments by the nursing staff! =)

Arrival Scheduled!

34 weeks
We had a Dr. appointment last night. They did an ultrasound to check baby E's growth. She is doing great in there. She is average size, but closer to the large side...in the 80th percentile. She currently weighs 5 lbs. 6 oz. She had her fist in her mouth the entire time we were there. Theresia, the ultrasound tech, kept pushing on my belly to see if she could get her to move her hands, but no luck. Baby E would move her hand for a second and put it right back in her mouth. I asked if it was normal for her not to respond much to all the pushing and prodding. Theresia said it was actually very smart of Baby E. She said the baby knows better, and she isn't going to move that hand for us because she is comfortable. She said when babies find something to soothe them (like fist sucking) at this stage it is considered "advanced" and a very good sign neurologically. That made us feel good. =)

After the ultrasound I had an appointment with Dr. Boveri. He did the norm..measured my belly and listened to the baby's heart. He said he really wants to see me get to 38 weeks. At that point he will take me off the heparin, and induce me at 39 weeks. As of now the plan is to induce me on June 30th! Wow! Baby Ehrler is going to be here in 33 days. He also scheduled for me to start the non-stress fetal monitoring 2xs a week. I start tomorrow.
Mike and I left Dr. Boveri's office very pleased with the growth of baby girl, and super excited to know when we finally get to meet her. I am much more comfortable knowing that my delivery is going to be planned and scheduled. I had a little anxiety about being on the heparin and going into labor on my own.

Things are moving right along. Fast!
The only real complaint I have is that I am having more trouble getting comfy in bed. Tossing and turning (which isn't easy at this size) wakes me up multiple times throughout the night (as will the baby once she is here!). I get up to use to the bathroom 2xs a night. The 4:00 break is a tough one because I cannot get back to sleep afterwards. My wheels are turning!! Everything is getting more exciting, and I am getting more and more anxious to meet this little girl.

The nursery is almost ready. We are just waiting on her furniture to arrive. Last I heard we have 2-3 weeks on that. I hope that information is correct, and it is here before she is. Although it really wouldn't matter if it isn't. It would just be nice to have her room ready and waiting.
I put all of our wonderful gifts from the shower away. I still have to wash everything, and I plan to start that this weekend. She will be here before we know it!

This past weekend was our Baby Shower. It was such a perfect day. I want to thank the hostesses (Ker and Mom - everything was awesome!) and everyone who attended (as well as those who couldn't be there, but would have if you could have).
It meant so much to Mike and I. Everyone's presence & generosity really reminded us just how lucky in friendship and family we are. I feel so blessed to have all of you in my life.
Thanks for your well wishes for baby E, and for being part of such a special day.

33 weeks!
Physically, I am feeling pretty good.
Mike and I went to the Cards game on Sunday. Great seats, great friends, great times! Cards won, couldn't have been better.
I think with the weekend being so full of fun events my rest took the back burner. I am very tired today. Mike looked at me this morning and told me I look really tired. I hope to catch up tonight after our birth prep class.

Emotionally, I had a "moment" last night. I think being tired mixed with feeling uncomfortable was a bad combination for me. I was doing laundry, and the bending down was irritating me. I hate dropping things these days. Bending down to pick things up is ridiculous!! =)
I told Mike (through a few tears) 7 weeks seems like such a very long time. He assured me that it will go so fast (which I know is true). He was very supportive.
After he calmed me down, I called my little sister Carissa who is 14 weeks pregnant. I told her I was calling to use her to make myself feel better. Hearing her say she is still 6 weeks from the half-way point made me smile. I told her thanks, and the rest of the night I felt just fine. =) ha! ha! 7 weeks didn't sound like such a long time anymore. Thanks Carissa!

Sometimes getting caught up in feeling uncomfortable and tired can take it's toll. I need to remind myself from time to time that this pregnancy is an amazing thing. Even when I am not feeling 100%, I am so lucky.

8 weeks to go!
Mike and I went to our birth prep class again last night. We learned a few different breathing methods, and watched some videos. Interesting. The breathing and relaxing is very easy when you are not in any pain. I just want to know how I am going to be able to concentrate on breathing like that if it is as painful as I am expecting??!
I told Mike on the way to the car that I am looking forward to the point in time AFTER labor. We both agreed that we are looking most forward to the moment we are pulling away from the hospital with our healthy baby girl in the backseat!
The thought of labor and delivery is getting a little scarier as our due date gets closer. I figure it has been done many, many times before. I can handle it! I think it is just a little fear of the unknown that gets ya.

I am noticing I tire easily again. I went shopping on Monday, and by the end of the day I was so ready to sit down!! Walking out of the mall to my car seemed like the longest walk ever. I also think I walk a little slower nowadays. I don't have near the energy I typically do. Carrying the extra weight is hard on my lower back.
Overall, I feel great!

If I slouch too much when I am sitting down sometimes the baby starts moving around. I think I am taking up her space. I have to sit straight up to please her. =) I understand how she feels. I think that little condo (as my mom refers to my uterus) is getting to be tight quarters for both of us! It's hard to imagine how much bigger I am going to get in the next 8 weeks.

This weekend is a big moment in time....Baby Girl Ehrler's first party!! At least the first party thrown in her honor. Our baby shower is Saturday, and I am so excited to get together with everyone (the food sounds pretty good too!)

I go to the Dr. tomorrow. 2 weeks from now I have another ultrasound, which I am really looking forward to.

A snippet about 32 weeks:
He's becoming quite a big baby, your little one! He's about 16 inches long and almost 4 pounds now. Your child is so big now that the space in which he moves is very limited. He can't make any more major movements - a final turn-around before he engages, at the most. But he can still prod, push and kick. However, once he engages, he will no longer change his position. Sometimes you can feel the engagement. At that time, you will get a heavy feeling in your vagina and some women have contractions for a brief while. After the baby engages, you will have more air and space in the upper part of the uterus. The lack of pressure on your ribcage is a huge relief - you can take a deep breath for the first time in weeks!

9 weeks until Baby E is due!

Week 31 is pretty much the same as week 30. I am feeling great. However, Mike has informed me that I complain alot. I hated hearing that. I am really trying to keep a very positive attitude. I think I am just getting anxious, and ready for the baby to come. Pregnancy is such a process. I feel like I have been pregnant for a really long time (and still have 9 weeks to go!).
We went walking on Monday, and I found that I walk much slower than I normally do. I also needed to rest a bit on the hills. Breathing is tough at times! It is hard to not be able to do things you normally can do.

On a positive note: I still love feeling the baby move around in there. She is super active, and I can tell a difference in her movements. I assume because she is much bigger. Her movements are more like "rolling and shifting" as opposed to the jabs and quick punches (although I still get some of those at times). Sometimes I just sit and watch my belly change shapes. Every now and then I can feel a hard spot. I like trying to figure out what body part I am feeling. I can tell her head is down and to the left because this little gal is a hiccup having baby! She has them close to 4 times a day. I did ask Dr. Boveri about the frequency of the hiccups, and he said NORMAL. =)

We had our second birth prep class last night. The instructor had us get in 3 different positions, and she showed our coaches (Mike) where to massage. It was fantastic! Mike was forced to give me a back rub! Ahhh! I told Mike that last night's class alone was worth the money we spent on the entire class. It's not everyday Mike gives me a back rub. Next week we watch "the videos" I am sure this will be good and reassuring! (and terrifying) ha!

30 weeks

Last week when the Dr. called to refill my Heparin prescription the pharmacy (2 different pharmacies) informed us they are no longer carrying Heparin. So, I have been switched from Heparin to a different anticoagulant called "Lovenox." The change is due to all of the recalls on Heparin. I tell ya, Lovenox is fantastic! I only have to take one injection a day, and the syringes come prefilled for me. However, with every good thing is an even better price tag. Wow! No wonder Dr. Boveri had me on the Heparin instead.

Mike and I started our birth prep classes on Tuesday night. Pretty much everything they told us on the first night was information that we already know from reading and learning over the past 7 months. We did enjoy the class, and I think the experience will be good for Mike and I. It is nice to set aside 2 hours to JUST talk and learn about this experience. It forces us to give the pregnancy our undivided attention. Which I love doing!
We go for a total of 7 weeks. Our last class will be on June 10th. Baby E's due date is 2nd in the class. Only one other couple is due before us.

I am still patiently (beginning to become impatient) waiting for baby E's furniture to come in. Mom seems to think it will be here by May 7th. I promised her I wouldn't bother her about it again until the 7th. I think I call her every other day to see if she has heard anything. I am probably driving her nuts! I am just so anxious to get the baby's room in order.

Baby E gets the hiccups a few times a day now. I am enjoying her movements more and more because she feels so much bigger now.

I have a Dr. appointment tomorrow. These weeks are flying by! It seems like I just went to the Dr. yesterday. No complaints here, I love going to the Dr.

29 Weeks

I can feel the baby with my hand when she is sitting just right. On Saturday we were at the horse fair with Mike's Mom and Dad (baby's "Grandmom and Grandpa"). We did a little walking, and that got the baby moving around. The baby was sitting in a way that I could feel her under my belly button poking out. It was neat to "make contact" with her. I couldn't figure out if it was an elbow, knee, head, butt or what?!?!
I look forward to feeling more of her little body parts sticking out of my abdomen.

Other new experiences....I am starting to get up more than once to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I find myself headed there around 1:00 a.m., and then again closer to 4:00 a.m. I go to bed close to 10:00 p.m., so I guess I am on the every 3 hour schedule. I also assume these sleep interrupting bathroom breaks are only a tiny preparation for the new schedule I can count on come July. I think it is natures way of "easing" you into your new life. =)
I was also awakened by a leg cramp this morning. I have read that some women get these when they are pregnant. I hope that is the only one I get (fingers crossed).

We are moving right along.
Mike and I have a busy month ahead of us. We have plans almost every weekend in May. Time is going to fly by! I still have things I want to get done, so our open weekends are going to be spent working around our house! (and finding the perfect name for our little girl!)

Dr. Update

I had my Dr. appointment this morning. My Mom (baby's "MiMi") went with me. It was nice to have her there. The extra set of ears was helpful (especially the way my memory is working these days). It also helped to have another person asking questions that Mike or I would not have thought of. We got a lot of questions regarding my heparin/blood clotting and delivery answered. I feel much more informed.

I had read a few things about patients on heparin therapy not being able to have epidurals, as well as some other issues that could arise. Dr. Boveri put me at ease, and I have a clearer picture of how things could possibly go. Most interesting is that Dr. Boveri is going to do Non-Stress Fetal Monitoring starting at 34 or 36 weeks (I forget when he said! SEE!). What happens is; 2 times a week I will go in and I will be hooked up to a machine that records the baby's heart rate. I will press a button every time I feel the baby move. With my blood clotting situation they like to do close fetal monitoring towards the very end of pregnancy just to ensure everything is safe and sound with the baby. If they have any concerns they will schedule an induction. In fact, he said they may schedule an induction regardless (around 40 weeks). This would allow me to get off the heparin for 24 hours, and make it possible for me to have an epidural. I will also have one more ultra sound around 32-34 weeks just to check on baby E.

Dr. Boveri informed me that I have gained 15 lbs. so far. My belly is measuring at 30 weeks, which is actually ahead of schedule!

All is great! I have to say, I love that I am going to the Dr. every 2 weeks. My appointments are very reassuring, and comforting. I couldn't feel better.

Negative on the Gestational Diabetes!

Dr. Boveri's office called last night. My glucose levels came back normal. Ahhh, big relief! I still plan on watching how often I indulge in the sweets. However, I sure did treat myself to a delicious bowl of Rocky Road last night.

Mike and I are headed up to Wisconsin this weekend. I am looking forward to it. It may be my last road trip for a while.

I have a Dr. appointment tomorrow morning.

3rd Trimester!!

28 Weeks:
I have to say it, being April 15th and all. This time next year, Mike and I will have a new tax deduction! =) ha!

I went yesterday for my Glucose Tolerance Test. First, they took my blood to check my levels while fasting (I had to fast for at least 12 hours). Then, I had to drink another one of the sugary glucose drinks. This drink had a little more sugar than the one from the first test (I think they taste good...kinda like orange soda). After that, they took my blood 3 more times. Once an hour. I should hear back from Dr. Boveri by sometime today, or tomorrow (Wed).

I have been experiencing some heart burn. This morning I had cereal and a banana for breakfast, and the heartburn set in about 20 minutes later. It truly doesn't matter what I eat, I am going to get the heartburn. I don't get it daily though, and it could be a lot worse than it is.
No complaints....yet.

My ribs have been bothering me a bit. I guess they are stretching out and being kicked and prodded by our little gal. I tell ya, her little kicks and punches are getting stronger and stronger.

For some reason I am feeling more tired the past couple days. I am blaming it on this winter burst we have had (in the middle of April). The sun wasn't out all weekend, and we had snow flurries mixed with rain, which I think has zapped me of my energy. The weather is supposed to clear up and get warm the next few days, so I think my energy will be back. In fact, I am counting on it!!

We had our garage sale this weekend (could be part of the reason my energy is zero?!?!). It was a success. It feels nice to have all of that stuff gone. We donated what was left to the Veterans.
Mike and I cleaned up our storage room, and just did some overall organizing. I feel like with each passing event (garage sale) we are that much closer to baby E's arrival.

I have made a short list of things I want to get done around our house (outside and in) before the baby arrives. I am not sure if it is too early to start "nesting," but I am on a mission. I find myself looking around the house thinking of things that we must do now before our lives are changed dramatically, and we have no time. Then, at the same time, part of me is telling myself to enjoy laying around and doing nothing over the next 12 weeks while we still can. Sleep while we can!! =)
I just want to get everything in it's place before I am huge, tired and don't have the energy to do it. OR, before it is terribly hot outside. Plus, Mike and I have some very busy weekends coming up.

Overall, everything is going fantastic. =) I am sure this Spring is going to fly by. Baby Ehrler will make her grand entrance before we know it. 12 weeks to go!

F on the Glucose Test

Dr. Boveri's office called me on Wednesday. Unfortunately, I did not pass my glucose test. I was at 144, and Dr. Boveri likes to keep it below 135.

So, I have to go in for the glucose tolerance test,which is 3 hours long (as opposed to the 1 hour test I failed). The nurse said that with my number being just a little high, chances are things are ok. However, I could have myself a case of gestational diabetes. I should know by Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

I hope I pass this one. Either way, I have decided to stop eating so many sweets. I really was giving in to my sweet craving a little more often than I should. Sweets have never been my thing (I am more for the salty treats), and I figured since that is what I am craving, why not?! I am going to shape up after that test! It wouldn't hurt either one of us for me to cut out the evening ice cream treat.
I'll write more after I hear back from Dr. Boveri.

Baby E got the hiccups today. I thought I had felt them once before, but today I am certain.

I received this in my email this morning. I loved it, and wanted to save it. I figured this was a good place for it.

We are sitting at lunch one day when my daughter casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of "starting a family." "We're taking a survey," she says half-joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?" "It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral. "I know," she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous vacations."

But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my daughter, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes.

I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable. I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without asking, "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub. That an urgent call of "Mom!" will cause her to drop a soufflé or her best crystal without a moments hesitation.

I feel that I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for childcare, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think of her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right.

I want my daughter to know that every day decisions will no longer be routine. That a five year old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at McDonald's will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom.

However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother. Looking at my attractive daughter, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give herself up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years, not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs.

I want her to know that a cesarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor. My daughter's relationship with her husband will change, and not in the way she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic. I wish my daughter could sense the bond she will feel with women throughout history who have tried to stop war, prejudice and drunk driving.

I want to describe to my daughter the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or cat for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real it actually hurts.

My daughter's quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. "You'll never regret it," I finally say. Then I reached across the table, squeezed my daughter's hand and offered a silent prayer for her, and for me, and for all the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this most wonderful of callings.

27 weeks..
I took my glucose test this morning. I hope NOT to hear back from Dr. Boveri in a couple of days. (I really want to continue enjoying my sweets! hee hee!)
I skipped breakfast this morning because of the glucose test (not by choice). I did have lunch afterward, but by 4:00 this afternoon I was very, very shaky. I decided maybe I needed more food. I made a small sandwich to hold me over until dinner, and it worked. The shakes were gone! I guess I didn't realize how dependant my body and baby are on the morning calories. Ooops! I feel much better now that I have had a snack.

My tailbone pain continues to bother me. I assume this is something that is only going to continue until this weight is lifted. Laying down is starting to become more and more uncomfortable. Finding a good position is tough. I have learned that I am more of a back sleeper, and that is not allowed. Pillows, pillows, pillows! They are wonderful! With the combo of the weight and the tailbone pain sometimes I feel like I am waddling (already). I told Mike that it must be so miserable for people who are extremely overweight on a normal basis. I truly feel for people who carry more weight than their frames should hold. I have heard from seasoned moms (and read in every book) that the last trimester is the most uncomfortable (duh, right?!). I feel like I am getting very small glimpses into the future. I can't imagine how my body is going to feel in 3 months. Yikes! =) However, I know it will be well worth it! Overall I feel great, my energy is great and I am still in the honeymoon stage of pregnancy!

I went to Babies R Us today. There are so many cute clothes for little girls. I am in trouble! I bought Baby E a couple of very cute outfits. I just couldn't resist.

Many people have been asking about Baby E's name. Well, I tell ya, we just aren't sure yet. Hopefully we have it figured out by July. I'll give you one hint, her last name will be Ehrler!

26 Weeks

Mike and I are back from our vacation.
Plans changed a bit, and we ended up not going on our cruise. We discovered that Royal Caribbean's policy for pregnant passengers changed 2 weeks ago. When we originally booked our cruise they would not allow pregnant women to cruise after 27 weeks. The new policy is 24 weeks (I would have been between 25 - 26 weeks on the cruise). They were still going to allow us to cruise, but after talking about it Mike and I both felt that policies are set for a reason. We felt more comfortable postponing. They gave us a voucher to use within the next 2 years. We felt in our hearts that everything would be fine, but we decided not to bother with the worry. We can have fun anywhere.
We stayed in Florida and basked in the sun for a few days. Mike's friend Ryan came and met us, and we took a road trip down to Key West. The weather was perfect!

I do have to say that I feel more at ease with my pregnancy when I am home. Every little ache and pain had me on full alert while we were out of town. Things I probably wouldn't even notice on a regular basis. Plus, there is nothing like your own bed!

I read that when you are pregnant the hormones can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Confirmed! I burned the first day out, and had to stay out of the sun the second day. It probably has a little to do with hormones, and a lot to do with the fact that my skin has not seen the light of the sun (cannot use a tanning bed) since last summer! Ouch!
I now have a decent tan, as well as peeling skin. No complaints!

Before we left for our trip I visited my friend Cory and her new baby Samantha in the hospital. Samantha was so tiny, and just adorable! It was awesome to hold a brand new baby. She was the first brand new baby I have seen since I have been pregnant. It gave me a little taste of the reality that there really is a little bity human in there.
Mike's friend Darby and his wife Erin, had their baby on March 29th. All of our friends that were due before me have had their babies. I guess that means we are next!

I went to my check up with Dr. Boveri this morning. Everything is looking good. Baby Bump is measuring at 26 weeks. =) Right on track. I asked about the child birth preparation classes. Dr. Boveri said people usually start going around 28 weeks. I am going to get us registered! He said the classes really just help alleviate some of the anxiety that comes with labor and delivery. I say, "let's do that!"
When I went to the front desk to schedule my next appointment with Dr. Boveri she made it for 2 weeks out. I told her I feel like I graduated! Instead of going to the Dr. every 4 weeks, I now start going every 2! Kind of makes me feel like I am "getting there."

I visited a different website this week for the update, I thought I would switch it up a bit:

When you are 26 weeks pregnant, your baby will start looking more like a "normal baby," the way he or she will appear at birth. Over the next 14 weeks he or she will continue to put on fat as it gets closer to delivery time.

Although your baby's eyes have been sealed shut for the last few months to allow the retinas to develop, they are likely opening and beginning to blink during week 26 of pregnancy.

Other fetal development that is occurring when you are 26 weeks pregnant includes the following:
Your baby begins to make breathing movements (although there is no air in the lungs)

The past week I have been experiencing some heartburn. I thought maybe I could narrow it down to what I am eating, and then stop eating it!!! However, after paying closer attention to when the heartburn occurs, I am convinced it is pretty much everything I eat. Also, my lower back/tail bone pains are becoming a little more frequent. I guess this is just my body's response to the extra weight. All is well, and these minor issues aren't anything I cannot handle. I just wanted to make a note of them.

The funny thing is, I forgot to write about this yesterday. Which brings me to my next topic: Forgetfulness. This is another one of my main symptoms of pregnancy! If I don't do whatever it is that needs to be done at the very moment I am thinking of it, it just slips my mind.
Mike has had to take extra caution with this little issue at work. I sent him to an appointment at 10:00, but the homeowner swears we scheduled it for 11:00 (See, I probably didn't write the time down immediately after scheduling the appt.). I honestly do not remember if I am right, or the homeowner is right? I am going to go ahead and give the client the credit on this one. I wouldn't put anything past me these days! This is just one example. I am sure Mike thinks I am unreliable these days, as far as remembering things goes. I am trying, I must write everything down! Mike has started re-reminding me to do things now. I cannot blame him! =)

Week 25!

This week is very exciting to me because Mike and I leave on Saturday for our cruise. I am not sure I have ever been more excited about a vacation?! I think it is because the weather is so dreary. The few days we have been blessed with beautiful sunshine and warmer temperatures were such a tease. I am looking forward to getting a little sun (bringing my skin back to life! have I ever been so white??) eating lots of good food, and getting tons of rest. I think Mike needs it more than I do. =) This will be great for both of us.

Needless to say, 25 weeks is also exciting because it is one more week under my belt. A belt that is steadily moving "the wrong way" on the notches (as Carissa and her Mike would say).
The good news is, I have really come to terms with my changing body, and I feel much more comfortable with my new appearance. I am almost ashamed of myself for how hard the changes (weight gain) were on me at first. Now that there is no mistaking I am pregnant when you look at me, I feel great! =) I suppose many women feel a little emotional about the "invasion of the body snatcher" at first. It is just so strange to watch your body grow so rapidly when that is something you spend your entire life trying to prevent. Once you get to the point where it is obvious there is a baby in there, it is a fantastic thing!

We are borrowing "cousin" Mitchell's bassinet for our girl's first few weeks at home. Mike and I brought it home yesterday. This is all becoming more and more real as we bring more baby stuff into the house. It's hard to imagine that a baby will be sleeping in that bassinet in less than 4 months.

I found something funny that I wanted to post. I thought this was a very strange quote from a pregnancy website I was on, so I wanted to share it's cheesiness with you;

"By the time you reach 25 weeks pregnant you are a magnificent and glowing specimen."

I have to agree though. Magnificent I am, and I certainly plan to be glowing after a few days in the sun next week. =)

How your baby's growing: Head to heels, your baby now measures about 13 1/2 inches. His weight — a pound and a half — isn't much more than an average rutabaga, but he's beginning to exchange his long, lean look for some baby fat. His hair is probably recognizable now (in color and texture), although both may change after he's born.

Everything is going well for us. I am certainly growing steadily!
I can tell the baby is bigger because her movements are so much stronger now. I can feel her in more than one place when she moves. For instance, I'll feel her on my left side, and at the same time I feel her moving way over on my right side. I guess she is just stretched out and enjoying her roomy environment (roomy for now).
The feeling of her moving is absolutely the best thing about pregnancy.

17 weeks to go! When I look at it like that, it doesn't seem so far away.

Everything is moving along smoothly. The only issue I have been having is a little pain in my lower back. I would actually classify it as my "tailbone." If I am up and moving/walking all day, it tends to bother me in the evening. I guess it is just a little extra weight putting some pressure on it. (I confess: I have gained 12 lbs. at this point).

Last night I made a really spicy enchilada dinner. Afterwards the baby was moving around like crazy. They say babies get a taste of what you eat through the amniotic fluid? I guess spicy is not such a great idea. At least now I know how to get her moving!!

Our friends Matt and Cori had their baby girl last weekend (Molly Ann).
Their pictures made me even more excited about the arrival of our baby. I just cannot wait!

Mike and I leave for vacation in 2 weeks. We are going on a cruise from Florida to Jamaica and Grand Caymen. I am really looking forward to it! (especially the food, sun and lots of zzzz's). At the same time I am praying that nothing happens that would require any medical attention while we are away. Surely everything will be just fine. I need to stop being a worrier (however, I hear the worry never stops).

Here is what is happening with baby girl this week:
Your baby has reached a nice milestone: he is a foot long (30.5 cm). A complete human being who weighs over a pound (about the size of a large mango), happily does somersaults and plays in his safe, warm, cozy nest.

Baby Bump has gone public!

It happened! The moment that (I am sure) most pregnant women look forward to. I was in public and someone noticed I was pregnant! I was stepping over one of those chains that divides or closes checkout lines. A woman that was standing there said to me, "You are pregnant, you shouldn't be stepping over that!" It didn't even bother me that she was giving me advice..I was thrilled! For everyone that knows me, you can imagine I didn't hold back my feelings. Before I was done talking to this woman, we had hugged and I had thanked her over 4 times. It was a definite milestone for me in this pregnancy. It was so nice to know that anyone with any sense can tell that I am not JUST fat, I am pregnant! I am officially telling the world I am pregnant, just by going into public. Ahhh, excitement!
I also have noticed a difference when I stand at my kitchen sink. I feel a bit farther away than I used to. I notice to get as close as I want, I have to really smash my belly against it. Interesting.

That being said.... I had decided before I even left the house yesterday morning that it is officially time to start collecting (and wearing) some maternity clothes. I had the hardest time getting dressed yesterday! I think I dressed and undressed 3 times before settling on a very uncomfortable outfit. I went out and bought a few maternity shirts and one pair of jeans. Both my pants and shirt were maternity today, and my goodness did I feel so much more comfortable!! I think I may have to officially retire my regular jeans for a bit.

Sunday Kerri and I went to Babies R Us to jump start my registry (Mike opted out, and I certainly do not blame him, I remember what it was like doing our bridal registry together!). All I can say about the baby store is, Wow! There are so many things you need when you are having a baby. I found the whole thing very overwhelming, but in a really good way. As the girl was explaining to me how to use the scanner etc. she referred to baby girl E as, my daughter. This was different to hear, and it actually made me a little teary eyed (I am an easy target for emotions these days). "My Daughter" wow!
I just have to say, Thank God I have Kerri! I would not have known what I was doing at Babies R Us without her. Every time I change something on my registry I call her to see what she thinks. Lucky for me she has done so much research on consumer reports and things. One less thing I have to worry about. Oh the perks of being the little sister! =)

I had my Dr. appt. yesterday, and everything is going well. Dr. Boveri used a measuring tape to measure from my pubic bone to the top of my uterus. He said I am measuring just right, 22 weeks and right on schedule!

Here is what babycenter has to say about the 22nd week:
Your baby now looks like a miniature newborn, checking in at 10.9 inches (the length of a spaghetti squash) and almost 1 pound. Her skin will continue to appear wrinkled until she gains enough weight to fill it out. Your baby's eyes are developed, though the iris (the colored part of the eye) still lacks some pigment. Your baby's lips are becoming more distinct, and the first signs of teeth are appearing as buds beneath her gum line. You won't actually see her first tooth until she's around 4 to 7 months old, unless she's one of the rare babies who are born with teeth.

21 Weeks

All is well here! Baby "E" is moving all of the time!

Her room is officially painted (thanks to Mike's hard work!). The colors we went with are pink and green (not your standard pink and green...but much better!). We did a darker pink chair rail separating the 2 colors on 2 of the walls (the other 2 walls are solid green). We picked out furniture, which will take about 6-10 weeks to come in (we have plenty of time).

Basically we are slowly getting things cleaned out, and in order for an April garage sale. We have discovered that we have WAY too much "stuff." Time to make room for baby!

Here is what baby center says about this week:
Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long the length of a carrot. His eyebrows and eyelids are fully developed. And you can certainly feel him move. He's oblivious to your schedule, though, so don't be surprised if he starts working out just when you're settling down for the night. If you're having a girl, her vagina is formed now, though it will continue to develop until birth.

I made some changes to the room decor. Over the weekend the Lavender bedding started looking really "country" to me, and I decided to exchange it! I am so happy with my choice. There are many other colors to work with in the "spring flowers" bedding I decided on! This is my final decision. I even purchased the paint yesterday! We are painting her walls pink and green.

The closet is officially cleaned out, and baby girl already has a few things hanging in it. I think I walked in there 3 times last night just to open the closet and see the tiny clothes.

Next Dr. appt. is scheduled for March 3rd.

20 weeks to go!

I am feeling "Baby Girl E" move a lot more lately. Wednesday night she was all over the place in there (may have had something to do with the delicious fudge brownie we had before bed....I know, bad! bad!). I thought maybe Mike would have been able to feel her for the first time (maybe - its so much stronger to me on the outside, because I feel it from the inside too). However, he is a BIG bear to wake up..and I didn't want to risk it (I would have to be absolutely sure he would be able to feel it before I do something crazy like wake him up!). =) Trust me.
So, today I was feeling tons of movement again. I had Mike put his hand on me, and he felt her! He looked impressed. =)

I think I have picked out baby GIRL bedding. I have had the hardest time making decisions with this. I am blaming my inability to make decisions on hormones (hey, why not?!?). We've already moved Mike's chest of drawers and the computer out of the room. Mike is putting closet organizers in, and we have the furniture selection narrowed down. We just need make our final decision (another one of those), and place the order. Things are moving along!

I bought a bright pink onesie for the little babe. I just couldn't resist buying a little something for her to wear after we found out she is a girl. (let the shopping begin...kidding Mike, just kidding! hee hee!)

As for my body....last week I told our postwoman at the showroom that I was expecting. She responded with "I was wondering, but I didn't want to ask yet." I also was chatting with a client that came in, I told her I was expecting a girl (we were talking about her boys vs. her girls, and she said girls are SO much harder) she responded with "I kind of thought you might be, but I didn't want to say because I have gotten myself into trouble with that before." THEN a woman that works for the city of Kirkwood responded almost the exact same way.
CONCLUSION: People can't tell if I am fat or pregnant. ha ha! Funny!

Everything is going good. Knowing the baby is a girl has made this experience so much more real...and FUN!

GIRL!!
It looks like my hunch was right! I couldn't be more excited! I am so glad we decided to find out. We had our ultrasound on Friday night, and everything looks great. The baby measured just a few days ahead of what Dr. Boveri had predicted. She measured at 19 week 2 days (on Friday we were at 18 weeks 5 days). They decided to go ahead and keep my due date the same, July 8th.
The sweetest thing was that "Baby Girl Ehrler" had her little legs crossed at the ankles, so cute!
We brought home several pictures from the ultrasound. I was looking at them last night, and I am so amazed by this little baby. I could just stare at the ultrasound snapshots.
We are both thrilled to be expecting our "daughter" (so fun to say that!). Mike claims she can't leave the house until she is 30. I think we may have a mild case of "Daddy's Little Girl" at hand. =)
I certainly will be sending my neutral crib bedding back, and switching to something more girly! I've already found 3 big butterflies that hang from the ceiling that I am just dying to buy.
A little girl is going to be so much fun!
